Beach Rehabilitation

Strandfasiliteite

Beach Rehabilitation Proposal

IMPACT STUDY BY DR. LARRY BARWELL

The meeting was informed that the beaches and parking areas at the beaches are in poor state. Mr. Wyngaard responded and informed the meeting that to avoid a situation of fruitless and wasteful expenditure he cannot do much maintenance work until the Beach Rehabilitation Proposal has been accepted to be implemented.

The consensus was that maintenance cannot be neglected in favour of beach rehabilitation.   Mr. A Wyngaard assured the meeting that Sandbaai will also be attended to in good time.

The meeting was informed that the plan in its current form was submitted to council, not for approval, but rather to inform council of where we are in the process and that it is recommended, that we should now take the next step to ensure the environmental security of our beach and surrounding area.

Recommended:

1. That the public participation process must be done in a form of a workshop and not just a meeting where the public is informed of what the municipality already decided on.

2. That the Ward Committee members discuss the report on the impact study by Dr Laurie Barwell with the members of their constituencies and that the minutes of that meetings reflecting their comments be submitted to the Ward Councillor and the administration to be placed on the agenda for the next meeting.

3. That Cllr. Lombard speak to Ms. Liezl de Villiers regarding kelp on the beach.

Wykskomitee 18 Mei 2023

That a combined workshop for Wards 3 and 7 be scheduled to discuss the study of Mr Laurie Barwell for Grotto and Sandbaai beaches.

MINUTES: 20 JULY 2023

Cllr H Lombard / Executive Mayor / T Marx / D Nel

That the Ward 7 Committee requested that while the awaiting the Impact study of the

rehabilitation of the dunes in Sandbaai to be signed off by Western Cape Government, they would

like to continue with the beautifying of the coastal and surrounding area of the section between

the traffic circle in Kusweg to the 4-way stop intersection close to Bamboo Beach restaurant at

the intersection of Kusweg and Piet Retief Street as this is in line with two of the projects

reflected on the Ward 7 IDP list.

Answer:

Tiaan: Meeting to be set up with Denis Grace and Tarron to determine the future of this project.

MINUTES 20 July 2023

The Chairperson informed the meeting that the impact study done by Mr L Barwell on the Sandbaai dune rehabilitation project was submitted to Western Cape Government, and they have acknowledged receipt thereof.

This might be a long process to get the study/report signed off. The Ward Councillor suggested that the Ward Committee put in a request to upgrade Kusweg from the traffic circle in Main Street up to the four-way crossing near Bamboo Beach Restaurant, as recommended at the Public Ward Committee meeting held on 3 April 2023 and presented to the Mayor, Dr Rabie (pages 19 – 21) and includes the reseal of Kusweg. This is in line with 2 of the Ward 7 projects that are reflected on the Ward 7 IDP list. The Ward Committee supported this suggestion.

Recommended:

That the Ward 7 Committee requested that while the awaiting the Impact study of the rehabilitation of the dunes in Sandbaai to be signed off by Western Cape Government, they would like to continue with the upgrading of Kusweg and pavements between the traffic circle in Main Street to the 4-way stop intersection close to Bamboo Beach Restaurant. This is in line with two of the projects reflected on the Ward 7 IDP list.
